EducationI graduated with my master's degree in Spanish and Latin American literature from the University of Virginia. Before that, I lived in Madrid, Spain where I taught English to children, high schoolers and adults. A few years earlier, I graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and English from the University of Florida in 2007. While at UF, I studied and lived with a host family in Spain for a summer.
ExperienceI am a native speaker of Spanish and English, and I have eight years of experience teaching foreign languages. From 2011 to present, I have taught AP Spanish, Spanish 4 Honors, Spanish 3, Spanish 2 and English as a Second Language in Virginia public high schools. In 2012, my AP Spanish Language students had an 88% pass rate on the AP exam (3 or above). In 2013, my AP Spanish Language students had a 92% percent pass rate with an average score of 4.23 out of 5.
Although I am most familiar with high school Spanish pedagogy, I have helped clients ranging from medical professionals needing basic communication to fuctionaries working for the government needing training for advanced Spanish exams.
I have been tutoring for over ten years, and have experience tutoring any age: from small children to working adults.
I am dedicated to my students' success and try several approaches to solve a problem. I believe in progress over perfection!
HobbiesI am passionate about language and cultural immersion experiences. I served as a teacher at Virginia Governor's School Spanish Language Academy in summers 2012 and 2013, a residential Spanish-only academy for 60 of Virginia's best high school Spanish students hosted at W&L University.
I spent the summer of 2014 on-board the Semester at Sea Northern European voyage, working and traveling with the students enrolled in the International Relations course and in the writing center.
My favorite hobby is traveling. I have traveled to 29 countries. I enjoy reading, learning languages, arts and crafts, and listening to music. I also know several types of latin dance and I am happy to teach them to my students!
**Please note: I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. My students can expect the same amount of notice from me as well. If the lesson is cancelled within the 24-hour period, I will have to charge the rate for the session. This policy saves everyone's time!

I hired Desiree to work with my 16 year old son who was struggling with Spanish III. She was very prompt at getting back to me to get started and extremely reliable. Her willingness to find alternative days and times to meet with my son when conflicts arose was wonderful. Desiree's knowledge of the material is outstanding and her way of presenting it to my son helped my son to understand what he was missing in class. My son said several times that he wished she could be his teacher and that in itself speaks volumes! I would not hesitate to hire Desiree for my other children or to recommend her to friends.
