My academic background includes an undergraduate degree (summa cum laude) in Biology and Biochemistry from K-State University and a master's in biology from the University of Miami (Florida). I believe an effective tutor is someone who takes a student past the rote answering of a question. Learning to read a question is essential to unlocking knowledge. Thoroughly dissecting a question so that it can be more clearly and easily understood is a large part of mastering the material. As a college instructor, I have used that approach with students in science labs. I have also worked as tutor for Sylvan and taught secondary school students in Japan. I have learned that if you celebrate the little wins along the way, you create confidence that the students can then use as momentum in the classroom. While I have a number of subjects I love, science, and especially biology and genetics, is my strong suit. I also spent four years working as a fisheries geneticist. Math is another favorite subject of mine, as is Japanese. I studied the language for three years and lived in Japan for 12 months. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and training birds for educational shows.
