Experience
English Professor at Kennesaw State University (Composition, Writing, Grammar, Research) 100 + tutoring students since 2006. 99th percentile on GRE Analytical writing (6.0/6.0) 94th percentile on GRE Verbal Reasoning (163/170) 98th percentile on ACT (32/36) Writing has been featured on ESPN's tru-hoop network and in Paste Magazine. Awarded the Leigh Holmes prize for excellence in writing by the Oklahoma State University board of regents. My name is Keaton and my passion is working with words. I currently teach composition courses at Kennesaw State University, where I completed my Master's degree in Professional Writing. I've worked as a professional tutor, a writing consultant, and a feature writer regularly for the past 6 years. I tutor because, for me, nothing is as satisfying as unlocking the expressive potential students already possess. I have extensive experience tutoring college students (everything from freshman writers to consulting on PhD dissertations), high school and middle schools kids, and have even spent the past year working with elementary schoolchildren as a writing and language arts specialist. I believe that every student possesses an instinctive understanding of language and expression, and that my job as a tutor is to lead them to this wellspring within them. My undergraduate degree was in Communication, however I compiled nearly enough English credits to declare a double major. I have an extensive knowledge of Literature (American, British, and World) and criticism and am capable of tutoring most texts and concepts taught in English courses, from elementary school through senior level university classes. On the GRE, my verbal reasoning (English language skills) score ranked me in the 93rd percentile in that skill set. As a lifelong reader, a lover of books, and a student of literature, I am well-equipped as a reading tutor. I've worked with children who have trouble reading, adults learning English as a second language, and even college students struggling with a particularly tough piece of literature. My study of the structure and origins of the English language enable me to bring a technical knowledge to reading instruction, when appropriate. My graduate work included extensive study of syntax and rhetorical grammar and I feel comfortable working with students writing in virtually every genre, since I tend to write in a variety of forms (short stories, novellas, essays, editorials, academic prose). I also obtained a perfect score on the writing section of the GRE (a 6.0), which ranked me in the 99th+ percentile of test-takers.
